Election 2004 - God -v- Kerry

Election 2004 - God -V- Kerry

I might have fared better at the polls if some young, enterprising reporter had tossed aside that last remaining secular doubt and spread awareness that God was indeed running for the Presidency.

This country was (in part) founded on the belief that matters of faith have no place in civic duty. A faith based agenda in office is not only nocuous but unnecessary. History has proven that we can judge the moral character of our leaders without a promise from them to legislate their personal ideology or the perpetuation of fear directed to those who dare oppose it. The founders of our constitution recognized that this causes a great divide and not unity. Americans enjoy religious freedoms with equal respect offered across the wide divergence of religion. It was never intended that Americans enjoy only the religious beliefs of our leaders. Let's consider those founding fathers for a moment and the task they laid out for themselves and our Country. Difficult decisions for devout men. Exigent and far-reaching decisions made when our new country enjoyed the highest level of objectivity.

We make a grave error when we ignore this wisdom.

Some of James Madison's wisdom on Separation of Church and State:

The civil Government, though bereft of everything like an associated hierarchy, possesses the requisite stability, and performs its functions with complete success, whilst the number, the industry, and the morality of the priesthood, and the devotion of the people, have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the church from the State (Letter to Robert Walsh, Mar. 2, 1819).

Strongly guarded as is the separation between religion and Gov't in the Constitution of the United States the danger of encroachment by Ecclesiastical Bodies, may be illustrated by precedents already furnished in their short history (Detached Memoranda, circa 1820).
Every new and successful example, therefore, of a perfect separation between the ecclesiastical and civil matters, is of importance; and I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in showing that religion and Government will both exist in greater purity the less they are mixed together (Letter to Edward Livingston, July 10, 1822).

Some of Thomas Jefferson's wisdom on Separation of Church and State:

Believing that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their Legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church and State (Letter to the Danbury Baptists, 1802).

...(P)roscribing any citizen as unworthy the public confidence by laying upon him an incapacity of being called to offices of trust and emolument, unless he profess or renounce this or that religious opinion, is depriving him injuriously of those privileges and advantages to which, in common with his fellow citizens, he has a natural right; that it tends also to corrupt the principles of that very religion it is meant to encourage, by bribing, with a monopoly of worldly honours and emoluments, those who will externally profess and conform to it (Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, 1789).

The clergy, by getting themselves established by law and ingrafted into the machine of government, have been a very formidable engine against the civil and religious rights of man (Letter to J. Moor, 1800).

History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes (Letter to von Humboldt, 1813).

Unfortunately, this wisdom is without a doubt being grievously ignored.

The current political atmosphere delivers this mentality: Republican (right) = Christian, decent and traditional moralists. Democrat (left) = Hedonist, immoral and deviant relativists. This President does not even make attempts to hide or mask his dependence on this divide. He has fostered it, running on a platform that promises a true democracy and deliverance for the righteous who follow him...and God. Listen carefully to those holding all offices. The moderate conservatives are now racing to prove they are "right" enough. And the pundit's advise to democrats? Conform. Allow your political platforms to lean right or lose to those who run for office...with God.

Megan,

Thanks for responding to my rant today. It's nice to actually hear from a few people from the "other side" who agree with me on the Terri Shiavo case.

I just had to come to your blog to read a few of your views.

I found another one that we do have elements we agree on, but we disagree on some of the other points. We even use some of the same sources to reach our conclusions. Here's what I wrote on the Separation of Church and State.
http://n7128v.blogspot.com/2005/03/myth-of-separation-of-church-and-state.html

Read the whole thing before jumping to conclusions, most people read the headline and assume they already know what I am going to say.

Have a nice day,
Hurricane Bob
