Canadian At Heart

Canadian At Heart In English
Canadien Au Coeur En francais

Yes, I am a disenfranchised American. I am reticent to become that Liberal American running for the Canadian border. I set myself apart from those Americans who (if their audience is large enough) denounce their American citizenship and praise Canada. I say to those Americans..."Stop using Canada, she is precious".

America is in trouble. We are now a nation focused on extremism. We are a nation focused on the black and white, pubs -vs- dems, conservatives -vs- liberals, christian -vs- secular, straight -vs- gays, economists -vs- ecologists. Hard lines. The grey has vanished.

Allow me to tell you what happened to my thought process. I have a friend. A most awe inspiring man. I love him more wholly than I could possibly love another human being. He has opened up a window to a world. I previously had myopic eyes on one existence. An American existence. He changed that. Among his many gifts, was an introduction to Canada (he is Canadian). Oh so subtle, this introduction. Cirque du Soleil, Canadian radio, Canadian politics, the culture, the history, an attitude...a home. Yes...very subtle. For several years I have absorbed it and reached out for more. What have I found? A more reasoned and open mind. I am nouveau au Canada...however, I find in Canadians a calm voice, an intelligent mentality, a dignified people, a more accepting culture. I find some grey matter. I find something that surprisingly feels like home.

Canada. I felt her arms outstretched to me long before I felt the once warm American arms recoiling.

First, let me say I am proud to be an American. No other country has enjoyed the freedoms, oppertunites and prosperity America has in the history of the world. Our advancements in techonlogy, agriculture. and medicince has made the world a better place. But we are still a young nation and we have growing pains. To address your fisrt paragraph I think its a good thing the grey lines have vanished. In order to grow we need to face our differences as a people. There will always be opposition on important issues and in the end I believe what is right will overcome what is wrong, even if unpopular. I am christian but I respect others views, I am straight and I respect the rights of gays, in the end the ecology will blend in and take equal footing with our economy. Take a different look at America(ns). Look in our communities. See the people who give time in shelters, help kids learn to read, help feed the less fortunate, free medical help, progams to help the elderly. You cant always judge a country by its leaders. You have to look at the people as a whole inside the borders.

Thank you so much for visiting here and commenting on my thoughts. I have really gone over your points carefully and you are right. Really you are. It won't completely change my feelings of being ostracized here. But I do need to recognize the true good as well. I never want to not appreciate that. I do feel drawn to Canada for so many reasons. The place and position I occupy in this country is a difficult one and I yearn for more truth and tolerance.

oh the grass is greener...

as a canadian, i can tell you that there are places where the america you described exist north of the border. at a meeting between grade 12 students, where we planned our grad ceremony, i was called a devil worshipper for daring to suggest that not all of the class was christian. fun.

but i think there is something true in what you said. we have our wing nuts here, but we have a lot more middle ground. we can talk about things a lot more. our camps are less protected.

everytime i surf, i'm reminded of these differnces.
