Symbolic Stand For Terri (A Call To Action)

I am editing this post to include links to some amazing friends of this cause. I encourage all of you to visit and share thoughts at all of these blogs and groups.

A special thank you to Hugh Hewitt for giving this blog such a broader reaching voice:

UPDATE 10:04 pm 3-25-05

AND THE INTERNET ATTACKS BEGIN - PLEASE NOTE:

I just received an email from jeb.bush @myflorida.com with an attachment. Of course I knew it had to be a fraud. No message and an attachment. I ran a scan on it and found the I worm (Virus "W32. Beagle.AB @mm" found). It is pretty easy to pick up on this one but please review all of your email carefully and scan before opening anything.

I have heard again from the VP at the Largo Hospice. He still refuses to budge. But I did tell him that I am having the ministry come by there to pick up the deliveries that have gone there and if he wants to refuse, he might do so in front of a camera.

I am doing very well in requesting the deliveries still coming in to be held at the pick up centers. I have gotten several tracking numbers. Please KEEP FORWARDING THE TRACKING NUMBERS to me and I will do all I can to be sure they all go to the same place so that we can see they get to the Ministry.

*INTERESTING NOTES*

1. The death threats and /or violet behavior limits the avenues of true advocacy.
2. Have you all heard that Judge Greer has been told by his church that he is no longer welcome there?

Megan

UPDATE: 2:57 pm 3-25-05

Michael Schiavo stops even the very small gestures.

To get you up to speed, I contacted the individual carriers and was told that the Woodside Hospice, where Terri is refused all deliveries and then called the carriers and arranged for the shipments to be re-routed to the Largo Hospice Center, 300 East Bay DriveLargo, Florida 33770 (727) 586-4432. I have had some communication with (and waiting for confirmation) the Metropolitan Ministries in the local area regarding the shipments of food and water. They are a wonderful outreach Ministry. I contacted the Largo Hospice Center and just heard back from them with the following message:

As Ms. Schiavo’s guardian has asked us to hold all deliveries made to her attention, we are making arrangements with Federal Express to return the shipment to its address of origin. Thank you,

Mike Bell
Vice President, Development and Community Relations
The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast
300 East Bay Drive
Largo, FL 33770

TEL.727.586.4432
FAX.727.586.5213

I am not done! I am going to keep the communication open with the Largo Hospice Center as well as the carriers to see I can have these rerouted to where our message will get out. This is what I think we are going to have to do...Call the carrier for your shipment with your tracking number and tell them you do NOT want the shipment returned, that you paid for the shipment and you want it delivered to the destination YOU choose. You can then have it redirected to Metropolitan Ministries (or another organization if you like). I am HAPPY to do this myself for multimple shipments. If you would like me to, please email me with your tracking number and I will continually call in the rerouting as I get them. I am going to call the carriers again now.

Megan

UPDATE: 11:25 am 3-25-05

This is just to let you all know that I am working diligently on the status of our deliveries and am getting more information now. I hesitate to post all the details until I have confirmations. I am in contact with the hospice centers, Fed Ex, UPS as well as getting confirmation from a large local organization about taking the deliveries and assisting us with this campaign. I just don't want to post sketchy information so please hang in there for just a little bit longer and I will have more diffinitive confirmations.

UPDATE: 11:01 pm 3-24-05

First Let Me Say...

This place here is small speck in the scope of this global community and in the scope of this incident. But I want to express a concern for the elevated levels of emotions. Passions are running high but this is a time that requires action but through calm reason.

Now...

Regarding our deliveries of food and water. We have each sent our own deliveries, via different methods. But in following up (netgrocer--fed ex) no deliveries are being made to the hospice center. They are being held at pick up centers. Tomorrow morning I will call three possible recipients (i.e. a church, a shelter, a food bank) and I will post them. I want to speak with them directly to be sure they will take delivery and assist in our effort to take this stand. Please email me if you have any questions or have any information on your individual shipments.

Megan

UPDATE: 12:18 pm 3-23-05

I just spoke with a surprisingly patient woman in Governor Bush's office. She took my information and any message I wanted passed along to the Governor which simply was:

This is not a right to die case. Death is only imminent for Terri if she is killed. She has never been terminal. She is incapacitated and we simply cannot become a people who condone the extinguishing of our weak, ill or debilitated.

I implore you to intervene and stop this barbaric killing of Terri Schiavo.

When asked about the position the Governor is considering with regard to possible intervention, she only said that the "Governor is looking into all of his options". An expected answer but we will likely rely on last minute intervention from the Governor so I encourage all to call and write.

UPDATE: 1:09 pm 3-22-05

I have such sadness right now. I am tired and frustrated. I am sick of hearing that Terri is a political pawn, I am sick every time I think of Terri being killed at the hand of her supposed care givers, with the support of our courts, and while the world watches. I am sick because we are officially a people who feel that our weak, sick, debilitated, incapacitated, and....inconvenient are expendable and can be extinguished.

We all know that the initial Federal judge has not found a legal avenue for the immediate, emergency resuming of nourishment to Terri. She has already been awarded her due process to have this seen in federal court. Barbaric that she be expected to just hang in there while being starved to death while the unoiled wheels of our judicial system grapple thru a decision on whether or not to uphold an order to kill someone.

I know all of us will not give up on Terri. I am hoping our deliveries of food and water will begin to get there today (some should already be there) and that this is picked up by the media and further calls attention to the truly horrific event taking place in that hospice room. Let's do all we can to remain resolute. Send food and water to the hospice, make calls, send emails. Taking these and many other measures sends our strength, hope and faith to Terri.

I posted this originally in the comments section of the previous post. I have received comments and emails on it so in order to better promote it, I decided to dedicate a new post to it.

Thanks so much to the new visitors and for your comments and support.

I would like to suggest an extension of our voices in opposition to the crimes being committed against Terri. I say we make a strong and symbolic stand. I think we should send food and water BY THE BOXFULLS to the Hospice Center. Keep sending and encouraging people to send until they decide to stop this murder and feed Terri.

We can make arrangements for the food to subsequently be given to a local shelter, but in the mean time, we make a symbolic statment that we do not accept anyone being starved to death on our watch!

Hospice House - Woodside
6770 102nd Ave
Pinellas Park, FL 33782

Please let me know how you feel and if you would be willing to get involved in this. You can reply here or email me. I will gauge what actions I take to prepare based on the support the idea receives. I will start promoting the campaign immediately and would appreciate any support.

Thank you.

Our politics are nothing compared to our Humanity.

This is a great idea and I've posted about it today too. I've also email Hugh Hewitt, a conservative radio talk show host, who has been talking at length about the Schiavo case for two weeks now.

It's a great idea - thanks again!

Welcome back Airman. I have searched again today for other liberal ears. It is very sad anytime one cannot see past a packaged political agenda.

Hi Megan!

I'm working on spreading the word as we speak!

Ditto the comments about the silence on the left. It's not very liberal to care so little for the most defenseless...I wish they knew how much the disability advocates cared about this too (and not just the "Christian right"). ::sigh::

A huge hug to you for everything you're doing!

Thanks "jt" for giving Hewitt the heads-up too! Especially effective targeting since he's kind of the Blogfather of the evangelical blogs...he should see that it isn't just them who care.

There is a fantastic Catholic blogger The Anchoress who I'm going to send this to as well; she's read by all kinds of people because she's really a wonderful person. (Check her out and see if you don't agree.) Maybe she'll help spread the word on your idea too!

Sapphoria / Megan said...

MrV...Welcome. It is wonderful that you will help with this. Arms outstretching wider and wider. It is a hopeful feeling.

Hey Beth! You are just incredible. You are staying with me over here and helping so much. I can't tell you how many people I have heard from who say they found our little gathering here because of you. I will definitely visit The Anchoress! And if there is anyone else you feel would be a good contact, please do let me know.

I am ashamed to say that most of my attempts to speak out to my side have been...well...a bit ugly. However, that does not discourage me in the slightest. We are tipping the scales in favor of right, good, decency and humanity.

So, you are the person responsible for the mindless blather about the Terri Schiavo on David's blog. I responded there, but will be a bit more direct here.

1) Ms. Schiavo has been, for all practical purposes, dead for a decade and a half.

2) The 'Save Schiavo' scam is propaganda for the ignorant initiated by the anti-abortion movement.

Megan, the reasons you have found little support from liberals in regard to the Save Schiavo silliness is because most of us are neither stupid, nor eager to define all states of being as human life. Those are the prerequisites for falling for the Save Schiavo scam.

Yes, you are being patted on your head by members of the far Right. The same people who happily rushed to the polls to slap down efforts to equalize rights for homosexual Americans in November. The same people who want to deprive women of the right to equal pay for equal work, and, to control their reproductive choices. The same people responsible for the massive and continuing impact of racism in our country. You are, apparently, sap enough to think the far Right cares about other people's lives. You could not be more wrong. The only use they have for either your or my life is trying to damage or end them. The use they have for Terri Schiavo's life is political exploitation of her empty shell.

I have been remiss in corresponding with my friend, David. But, I will make a point to email him about allowing you to post to his blog. By allowing you to use his site, he has made it appear he supports your foolishness.

Sapphoria / Megan said...

Mac Diva,

Thank you for stopping by and contributing your thoughts. They are a bit hostile, but if that is the tool you need to use to communicate your thoughts, you are certainly free to.

1) You may have a clear and personal definition of "practical purposes" but I am sure you realize that this is a highly debated issue. I could adeptly argue that Terri is not dead. She is incapacitated. There is a difference.

2) Regardless of your opinions, it is grossly unfair to call this woman's life and the fight of her loved ones to keep her from being killed a "scam". I cannot say enough, that you have a right to own and express your vehement opinion but there is an inescapable fact here. A willful act is being committed that will result in the death of a human being. That IS the legal standard for murder.

I am not, by any stretch of the imagination "ignorant" nor am I involved in the anti-abortion movement at all.

You continue to call those with opposing views "stupid" and perpetrators of a "scam". It's not the brightest course of action to feel there is only ONE perspective on any given set of circumstances.

I am not being "patted on my head" Mac Diva. I just refuse to subscribe to your mentality that every single conservative individual fits some mold you have cast for the "Right". I know I certainly won't allow the right - or anyone - to do that to me. I am not some cookie cutter version of "Left" or "Liberal".

Beth said...

Mac Diva,
As one of Megan's conservative friends here, I respectfully disagree with you about what this is about.
I'm pro-life, but this really isn't about the pro-life movement at all to me, much less reproductive rights (???). This for me is about other things, to wit:
--Rights for the disabled, above all other things involved. There's a reason why disability advocates are just as vehement in their support for Terri as the pro-lifers, if not more so because of the REAL impact this has on their lives.
--The fact that Terri hasn't even had a fair diagnosis. It's a fact that a proper PVS diagnosis can't be made without an MRI or PET, and she's been denied this all along because the judge has followed Michael Schiavo's wishes to disallow the tests. Further, a proper PVS diagnosis takes a far longer period of observation than was given by the neurologists that diagnosed her (thirty minutes???). PVS diagnoses are also usually up to 40% inaccurate--notoriously difficult to diagnose. I'll gladly give more specific refutations to the argument that she's "brain dead" (much less "dead"!) if you'd like, but I don't want to hog the comments here.

Seriously. I'm not from the "Christian Right"--this isn't about that for me.

And finally, you're just plain wrong about us not caring about people, and about us being anti-gay, racist, all the things you said. There are jerks like that, but they exist on BOTH sides.

You might find that out if you took the time or tried to find some common ground with your ideological opposites as Megan has done.

And for the record, David doesn't agree with the Save Terri movement; he's just not close-minded, as you sound like in your comment.

I don't expect to change your mind, Mac Diva, but your attack on Megan really is unwarranted. I don't care if you continue to think I'M a crazy wingnut, but attacking a person based on one issue you disagree with is just self-defeating. If nothing else, you ought to think about the fact that there are conservatives who might be more willing to listen to Megan's point of view on other issues because she has found common ground with us. Get it?

(I'm taking this thought to ISOU, too.)

Sapphoria / Megan said...

Oh Tim, it would be wonderful if more on both sides would. Even being members of our party or an ideaology, we are still very much individuals.

You and many of my visitors here would probably disagree, but if this were truly a "right to die" case, my position would be slightly different. But this is not about an individual's right to die...it is about awarding another individual the right to kill.

Beth said...

it is about awarding another individual the right to kill.

That's right Megan, and it begs the question, where are the anti-death penalty people (besides those in the pro-life community, that is)?

A lot of people on the right have sarcastically noted that if somehow Terri could be framed for capital murder and sentenced to death, she'd have a better chance at life. In theory, it's true.

(For the record, I'm not a fan of the death penalty either, although some cases do give me pause. Still, I'd be fine with just not doing it. There's a lot to be said for "prison justice." I hear the inmates at San Quentin are foaming at the mouth to make Scott Peterson their bitch...LOL)

In respone to Mac Diva's
1) Ms. Schiavo's parents say Terri has been alive for the last decade and a half. She just hasn't recived the poper
care which her husbnad hs withheld though when in court for a malpractice suit he wanted millions of dollars to
give her proper care.
2) Scam?? There is no scam here..you dont have to be conservitive, liberal, green, blue, black, red or white to showcompassion for Terri and outrage that the reasons to withold food and water till she dies is boiled down to the word of her husband, his brother and his brothers wife. For the first 5 years while Mr. Schiavo was in court trying to get millions of dollars to care for Terri this never came up. Only after he got the check did he say she wanted to die and has been fighting in the courts to do just that.
I think it is ( to use your word) stupid to compare this to the anti-abortion movement. There is not a conspiricy under every rock...Sometimes people just care what happens to other people. And Terri Schiavo is a person and her parents love her..FYI.. I am about as liberal as they come.

I will reiterate once more what any intelligent person aware of the Schiavo situation should know by now. She has been in a persistent vegetative state for 15 years. Her condition is irreversible. However, Ms. Schiavo serves as an excellent propaganda tool for the far Right. Their goal is to alter the meaning of human life to include reproductive cells and human bodies that cannot function. If they succeed, abortion and euthanasia will be made illegal. By claiming that someone will no cerebral cortex is functional, the 'right to life' movement moves closer to its goal.

The Schiavo scam is a fueled by a few minutes of edited videotape. They purport to show that Ms. Schiavo responds to her mother. In fact, the video was edited from hours of tape and spliced together to create that impression. Those hours of tape show a body in a vegetative state. There is indeed eye movement and slight changes in facial expression, but they are those of an automaton.

Intelligent people who happen across this thread will want to know more about how this misleading situation was created. There is a news story on today's wires that examines how the videotapes have been used as a tool of propaganda. You can read it here.

I don't expect stupid people or right to lifers to be influenced by the truth about the Schiavo situation. But, thoughtful people will find the additional information of interest.

Sapphoria / Megan said...

Mac Diva,

You make sweeping and unfair assumptions about people. You need only actually read and pay attention to people's thoughts to understand that even though most might be quite reluctant to listen to your rhetoric of "study the information I have because, well...because you are stupid." I really am going to have to ask you to feel free to share your thoughts here but withOUT this juvenile name calling. Speaking for myself... Unlike you, I have not closed my mind to other views. I can only come to a defendable position by looking at all sides. I do. If you visit David's blog again http://www.grupo-utopia.com/blog/isou/archives/2005/03/terri_shiavo.html , you will see that THIS type of exchange shows that respectful dialogue from opposing sides is productive.

I will review the information on the link you provide here, but if you can open your mind the tiniest little bit, you will understand that there is a wealth of information to support our position as well.

And just so you kow - Mac Diva is well known for trolling blogs under different names.

The center of this issue is Michael Schiavo.

He first applied for money to pay for Terri's long term care. When he got the money (7 figures), he then claimed that Terri had said she wouldn't want to live like this. He has persistently refused to give her any sort of therapy. He ordered that there be no TV, no radio, no sunlight (the blinds are closed by his order), no physical retraining (she might be swallowing her own food if she had recieved physical therapy, say some doctors), no dental care, no gynecological care, no NOTHING. Terri has had another similar seizure, which doctors say would not have happened if she had received just the most basic of care.

Mr. Schiavo's brutal treatment of her seems designed to, if not cause her death, at least prevent her rehabilitation. What is he afraid of? That she might be able to remember and tell something?

He is himself a trained nurse. If it were possible to cause the kind of chemical imbalance that precipitated her heart attack, he would know how. But he has never been investigated, I am told because he has some sort of friendly ties with the Sheriff's department.

He wasted no time finding another woman and creating children. He has a manifest conflict of interest and should not be permitted to be the legal guardian of Terri and dictator of her fate. He is the defacto common law husband of this new woman; he cannot in good faith call himself Terri's husband anymore. An honorable man would admit this and sign over care to the parents. But Mr. Schiavo drives forward, determined for Terri to die. He cannot be trusted. He is not operating in good faith.

The signs at the protest should read "save Terri, investigate Michael!"

I am a "right wing wacko" according to Mac Diva's description, but I am capable of disagreeing without being disagreeable. It seems that civil discourse is beyond some of us. I'm sure that you and I probably don't agree on everything, but I feel certain that we could sit down and have a real discussion, exploring each other's opinions and the experiences that have led to those opinions, and part, still not agreeing on things, but having a better understanding of each other and OURSELVES.

I was beginning to loose hope that the entire left had been converted to the pro-death side of the equation thanks to moveon.org.

I echo the sentiments here, but was also like to add that this is a call for all of us, who have not done it yet, to get our living wills in order. Also, make sure that the only copy is not in a safety deposit box because those can be sealed by court orders. It is beyond me how anyone, liberal or conservative, could sentence a human to die under such monstrous and barbaric means. As a mother of three, I cannot even think about this happening to my kids.

By what authority, other than talking heads, does Mac Diva and others state so unequivocably that they KNOW she is not there. No one has been allowed to video her, take pictures or see her for the last several years except her family.

Question for all of you: why is it so important for you that she be kiilled?

Love your suggestion about sending food and water to the hospice. Thanks again for your blog!

This is good work, lesbiencestmoi. Terri's plight has been misreported as a right to die case with opinions split along predictable left/right lines. It's good to see people like you give the lie to that idea.

Sapphoria / Megan said...

Anonymous,

You are so right. If you take this situation all the way from the start, we see SO clearly that there has been little to no evidence of any care. The course this case has taken absolutely defies explanation.

The way I approach thinking about this is...get that abused and neglected woman nourishment and water this minute!! Once we have accomplished that and Terri is in the hands of those who will love and care for her. It is my hope that she thrives surrounded by those who celebrate every minute. The fact that she survived this barbaric ordeal makes her a living, loving miracle.

With her right to her life given back to her, there are subsequent battles. There are many in ready position!

TJ..."shy away from the irreversible course of action." Put so well. I will never understand how someone can opt for the alternative??

Anonymous (2) (Another member of VRWC in CA!.) Thank you so much and I can't say how much I agree with your eloquent words. We would likely disagree on much. But two people with different ideas who can reasonably communicate...and listen will always accomplish more that those who draw a line in the sand.

Julie, I am sorry to hear about your cousin. Clearly he is held safe and loved. My sincerest well wishes to you and yours and thank you for your support here.

Beth!! (BIG HUG) You just crack me up!! Mac Diva seems way out of her league in here!

Patinator, once I realized that this really was dividing itself via left / right, I hoped more of those in my "house" would apply less politics and more humanity and take a stand. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I think there are many who would choose to protect Terri's right to her life, but worry about being "bad democrats". That is probably even worse.

Joi, Hi! Mr Hewitt has been responsible for sending so many wonderful people here. Yes, I have hoped that the media will pick it up. I will be proactive there as the support builds. And it sure has! I will work on my end to (badger) the media to give attention to those who insist this slow, painful and unthinkable killing be stopped!

Dee, No...thank YOU. I will never understand it either. I have said it before, but anyone armed with the truth knows this is NOT about an individual's right to die, but about awarding another individual the right to kill.

Sine, welcome to you as well! And thank you. There is no imminent death for Terri unless she is killed. It is as simple as that. HOW has this fact escaped so many?

Some idiot linked to my "not all Christian Conservatives" post (probably Anonymous) with a snide remark about liberals for Terri.

I'll bet some of them come over here to fling some poo like the monkeys they are. Should be an interesting night.

If I were you, I'd delete that stupid anonymous "potato" comment, although it does give clear insight as to the mentality of these death-cult wackos.

Thanks Beth---for the info and for pulling no punches! I will leave it here for just the reason you state. To show that no matter what "side" you are on, it is a somber and tragic time for so many. Anyone who can make the kind of comment "anonymous" did reminds us that there are heartless parasites crawling around everywhere. Anonymous, you know what? I would equally defend even YOUR right to not be murdered.

Beth, my friend...it might indeed be a bad night. Let's see how it goes. If it gets too bad, I will begin the "click-click" process.

The folks at Discarded Lies (http://www.discardedlies.com/) are all over this story.

In fact, DL poster Sine linked to your site, which is why I'm visiting, and I'd like to express my support for this worthy cause.

While I'm a big supporter of a person's right-to-die, we have only Michael Schiavo's word that that's what Terri wanted, and Mr. Schiavo clearly has a huge conflict of interest in this case (money, alternate significant other).

This isn't about Terri's right to die, it's about Michael's right to kill.

It's sick.

I am also tired. Of people so ignorant they can't grasp that a woman without a cerebral cortex cannot have any responses beyond the autonomic ones controlled by the brain stem. That she can't think, speak or emote. Of clownish sorts who take food to a woman who has not been able to eat for 15 years, or 'symbolically' fast. Of the Right Wing extremists who are getting mileage out of this farce, including 'kill people to save fetuses' champion Randall Terry, militia madman Bo Gritz and quack doctor Bill Hammefahr, who has made millions off people's credulity.

Though I am tired, I do see relief in sight, and, a silver lining. Once Terri Schiavo expires, the $80,000 per year in Medicaid funds being spent on that hopeless case can be used for sick people who really can be helped. As a result, some lives may be saved.

Mac Diva,
Your ignorance of the affair is appalling. I can't even be bothered to refute the bullshit you've written (" a woman without a cerebral cortex cannot have any responses beyond the autonomic ones controlled by the brain stem. That she can't think, speak or emote," etc.).

BTW, do you know that you've developed quite a reputation as a serial troll--and by those on the right AND left?
Maybe it should tell you something. Like maybe you should stop talking out of your ass? It's noteworthy that a TROLL such as yourself doesn't allow comments your own blog--afraid you'll be called out on your ignorance? Are you afraid that people will have a few choice comments for you?

Behold Mac Diva, Queen of the Moonbats.

Oh and BTW, I won't host your drivel at my site if you think you'll come by and shit on the rug. Consider yourself banned in advance.

Megan, I notice that your Nazi 'friends' curse a lot. However, they never have anything substantive to say.

I must say you really reach, even for a sycophant. It is as if, for you, only the very bottom of the barrel will do when scraping it. While you are ingratiating yourself with Hugh Hewitt, you might want to read this attack on gay marriage. Suffice it to say your affection is not reciprocated.

I am very pleased with the way the Schiavo situation is going. Congress' illegitimate use of power went exactly where it should -- nowhere. Both the 11th Circuit and a state court have rejected the appeals. SCOTUS (the Supreme Court of the United States) has previously refused to hear Schiavo appeals several times, and, will likely do so again. If the Schindler's are not exaggerating about a swift return to Ms. Schiavo's natural state, the drama should be over by the end of the week. Despite the shameless lies of the Right to Life movement, the polls say most Americans still favor removing the feeding tube.

My hope is that some people learned something from the brouhaha. Maybe what a persistent vegetative state is. A lesson in separation of powers. Perhaps that they need to sign living wills and appoint someone with power of attorney just in case themselves. However, I suspect any informative aspect of the situation will be utterly lost on the sort of 'friends' you are cultivating.

MacDiva - At this point, I sincerely hope that Terri *is* in PVS because if she's not, she must be in excruciating pain. I know from personal experience that 3 days without food and water causes immense pain - I woke up to it after a bicycling accident once. She has now gone 5 days without either.
However, I would like to know just how you know that she has no cerebral cortex remaining. Have you got access to medical tests that no one else has? If so, you violating federal law discussing your patient publicly. If not, you don't know anymore than anyone else posting about this.
I am neither right-wing nor left-wing. I am appalled that this has come to court intervention, actually. I think that family business should be family business unless provable abuse exists. Again, I don't know the facts about that, but Mr. Schiavo's guardianship looks fishy because right after winning the lawsuit he began withholding treatment. What I do know is, I wouldn't want someone to say I am PVS without a series MRI or PET scan definitively showing increasing cortex degeneration. And, I am fairly certain, that were that available in the Schiavo case, it would be plastered all over CNN et al.

Ogre said...

I just heard on the radio on the way home something about the Florida Dept of Children having had a doctor just examine her and declare that she is NOT in a PVS, and that she has been misdiagnosed and abused. What if all you people who claim she is brain-dead are wrong? Just consider that possibility for one second, if you can. What if she IS alive? None of you have met her and talked to her, so you really only have others' words.

Anonymous said...

Ann, since you asked your question in a polite way, I will answer it.

I have been aware of the Schiavo case since I was a law student more than a decade ago. I've read all of the opinions and looked at the supporting documentation. In addition, I read much of the coverage in the media. So, yes, I have done the research necesssary to reach a conclusion. More than 40 experts, usually court-appointed, have conducted independent examinations and tests of Terri Schiavo. Their results are consistent. The experts say her cerebral cortex has dissolved and she is in a persistent vegetative state. Their tests included both PETs and MRIs. All keeping her on the feeding tube does is prolong her lifeless 'life.'

There is so much disinformation being put forth by the Right to Life movement that I am going to rebut only some of it.

1) Contrary to what you may have heard, Michael Schiavo adamantly opposed removing the feeding tube for four years. He even paid to have electrons implanted in his wife's brain in hope that would improve her condition. It did not. Only after exhaustive examinations and the passage of time did he decide to have the feeding tube removed.

2) Ms. Schiavo has received excellent care. Her husband won a settlement of $750,000 that was spent to provide for her until it ran out. He also spent part of his $350,000 award for lost of consortium on her care, including the expensive operation. She is now sustained to a tune of $80,000 per year on Medicaid.

3) None of the experts consulted believed Ms. Schiavo had any chance of recovery.

4) The doctor claiming to be an 'almost laureate' who treated Ms. Schiavo operates a clinic where he claims to rehabilate brain-damaged patients, but not those in PVS. He did not submit any cognizable evidence to the court. As a result, the court chatized him, barely stopping short of calling him a fraud. The fact that he is the only physician the Schindlers can get to take their side is telling.

In summary, what I am telling you is what the courts are seeing when those appeals come before them. They are seeing a hopeless case, fully documented over a 15-year period.

The Right to Lifes movement sees the Schiavo situation as a way to make progress with its goals of expanding the meaning of human llfe and outlawing abortion and euthanasia. The GOP sees the situation as a way to enhance its standing with the Right to Lifers. But, that may not happen. Most Americans still believe the feeding tube should have been removed. And, some thoughtful conservatives -- not the ones on this thread, obviously -- are appalled by the federal government intruding into a private matter.

I think the best way for us to protect ourselves from a situation like Schiavo's is to prepare living wills and other documents that state specifically as possible what we want to happen if we are severely injured. If you are concerned about specific tests being done, state that you want them in those forms. If you want to continue or reject food and hydration, say so. It is also important to give reliable persons powers of attorney.

I have worked on cases involving severe injury and wrongful death. I know from experience that there are times when the humane thing to do is pull the plug.

The Anchoress,

Thank you so much for being here. I have visited your impressive blog and just can't say how happy I am that you decided to lend your voice over here.

There is so much activity at the hospice center that a real update is difficult. Many have sent packages from their home and these are impossible to track. I do know that I and many have used Beth's suggestion of netgrocer.com. I put a call into them today in hopes of verifying the delivery of any food and water today and to perhaps better coordinate more deliveries. I want to be sure they are indeed attempting delivery and find out if they are getting them made.

I should know more tomorrow and will give an update then as well.

Thank you again Anchoress and you putting this on your blog as well is an honor.

Mac Diva,

There are quite a few missing pieces of information you are either not aware of or choose (like the MSM) to ignore.

Affidavits from nurses that were assigned to Terri for long periods of time stated that she was NOT in pvs, but laughed at appropriate moments, cried, and spoke words such as "mommy" "help me" and "pain" when she was on her period. They were all told they would be fired if they did any therapy on Terri.

Michael Schiavo's attorney, George Felos, just so happened to be chairman of the hospice where Terri was illegally and secretively moved mid 1990's. Do a google search on his name and you'll find quite an eyeful of information. that again, has been ignored by the MSM.

Terri's hospice is under investigation by the DHHS, which is trying to collect over $14.8 million dollars in Medicare insurance fraud.

I could list more, but hopefully this will intrique those in favor of killing her to do their own investigations.

The "Right Wingers" are NOT using this as a political ploy to further their agenda as you assert. That, my dear, is projecting what you would probably do. If so, speak for yourself, not for people you do not know.

I am dumbfounded, outraged, and sickened that anyone would be granted permission by the courts to starve a spouse to death (along with lack of hydration). Heaven and earth would be moved to accomodate serial killers facing execution. What's the hurry with Terri?

Sapphoria / Megan said...

Mac Diva,

Your outrageous accusations and defamation are an insult to the calm compassion and outreach that exists here.

Hugh Hewitt and I would likely disagree on much. That does NOT mean we cannot join in voice and effort on those issues where we do agree. In case your small mind cannot grasp this...that is a positive thing Mac Diva. Being willing to do this opens up avenues for dialogue and compromise. I will point out to you that the kind and compassionate people who have contributed here on my blog could have thought THEY were scraping the bottom of the barrel, couldn't they have? I guess they are a little less myopic than you are.

Consider this...my visitors here and Hugh Hewitt have never once shown me disrespect. Yet you...the one on "my side of the aisle" has seen fit to bash me at any opportunity. I think I have a pretty good idea of who is at the bottom of the barrel.

You rock, Megan.

What I'd like to know is, where are the feminists? What happened to a woman not being owned by her husband? From where I'm standing I can't see any difference between what the courts are permitting Michael Schiavo to do, and what slaveowners could legally do decades ago. Are we really going that far backwards?

Got here from the Anchoress - who also rocks!

Funniest part of her last comment:

So, your brainwashing is complete, Megan. Maybe there is someone surprised by that, but it isn't me. This entry is an exercise in inability to grasp facts and pandering to the far Right in exchange for pats on the head. You are a female 'Jeff Gannon.'

Reality is that no one is being killed. Instead, someone is being allowed to die. Everyone dies, often not comfortably. Nature is taking its course after a 15-year delay. It is unfortunate that the rational course of action, removing the feeding tube, was not followed sooner. Resources devoted to Terri Schiavo's care could have been spent on patients who would have recovered.

I have some criticisms of the legal system. But, in situations such as this one, I appreciate it. But for having a process based on reason, ignorance and political machinations might prevail.

brain·wash·ing ( P ) Pronunciation Key (brnwshng, -wôshng)

n.

1. Intensive, forcible indoctrination, usually political or religious, aimed at destroying a person's basic convictions and attitudes and replacing them with an alternative set of fixed beliefs.
2. The application of a concentrated means of persuasion, such as an advertising campaign or repeated suggestion, in order to develop a specific belief or motivation.

Given that I clearly refuse to blindly follow one ideology (be it right or left) without question, I would suggest that you have diagnosed my condition with as much validity as you have diagnosed Terri Schiavo's condition.

Mac diva..
Either you are misinformed or just plain lie...I am not going to go over every falsehood you stated..But I will correct a few.
Terri has had neither a PET scan or an MRI..She has had a cat scan several years ago...She also had electrodes
inserted into her thalmus to try to stimulate activity...Of the $700, 000 malpractice awarded for her care and rehabilition
more than $400,000 has gone to pay Geroge Felos legal fees in Mr. Shciavo's attempts to remove her feeding tube.
No one knows what he did with the other $300,000 he won for lost consortium damages. When Mr. Schiavo first petioned the court for tube removal there was a sizable amount for him to inherit..but The Schindlers have fought long and hard in the courts and that ate up a half the money.

Follow this for a second if you can..The Schindlers asked their congressman to for help..a constituent asked an elected offical for help...And he did..he took it to congress and they acted on it..right or wrong...Congress didnt just stick there nose in it...They were asked to by one of there constituents...isnt that how it is supposed to work??..Anyway Ive got to go....Keep up the good work Megan...you rock

Wow! Another person who is making sense on this thread. You go, doc nos!

I have simply posted the findings from the court records in summary. Those records say the applicable tests took place, several times over the 15-year span. The tests were conducted independently by experts. The kind of person who prefers disinformation and misinformation from Right to Life sites will, of course, sputter and spew in regard to facts. Facts are anathema to someone of that sort. I accept the denial of reality as being the nature of those persons.

As any reasonably well-informed person knows, a medical trust must be used for medical costs. The $750,000 Michael Schiavo won in a malpractice lawsuit was not available to him personally. It was all used to pay for the care of Ms. Schiavo. He also used part of his own award of $350,000 to pay for her care, including the expensive surgery to implant electrodes.

The meddling of Congress in a private matter is the issue that is troubling thoughtful conservatives most. They, understandably, are unable to reconcile the supposed opposition of conservatives to intervention in people's family life with Republicans' intrusion into the Schiavo episode. They are also concerned that Bush's alleged respect for federalism was thrown to the wind when put to the test.

Hopefully, Ms. Schiavo's long journey to the inevitable will end soon.

There was an article interviewing the mother of the first right to die case plaintiff, Karen Quinlan, in the papers yesterday. She chose not to prolong her daughter's life after unrecoverable injury. Since her daughter's death, Mrs. Quinlan has established a hospice that cares for the terminally ill and those with unrecoverable injury. She seems very serene and has done society unmistakable good. The Schindlers might learn a thing or two from her example.

My point is....
people change or stretch the truth to to fit there own beliefs...I never said the tests would change her diagnosis. This is a very unique situation..Their is sworn testimony on both sides saying the opposite things regarding what TS's wishes..just follow the timeline..Ts care changes once the money is in...Ms swore in court that he needed millions of dollars for her care...If it was TS wish to die than why would he need money for her care?

1991
Feb - Terri moved to home with husband.
Jan - Terri moved to Bradenton Mediplex Rehabilitation Center.
Apr - Terri's condition is assessed as improving.
Apr - Terri's husband advised to move her to Gainesville Rehabilitation Center to receive advanced therapy to continue Terri's recovery.
Jul - Terri moved to Sable Palms Nursing Home.
1992
Aug - Terri awarded $250,000 in malpractice settlement.
Nov - Terri awarded $1.4 million in malpractice trial.
Nov - Michael Schiavo awarded $600,000 in malpractice trial.
1993 And it all goes downhill from here.........
Feb - Michael Schiavo denies recommended rehabilitation treatment.
Feb - Schiavo and Terri's parents have falling out regarding lack of therapy for Terri.
Feb - Schiavo withholds medical information from Terri's parents.
Feb - Schiavo posts Do not Resuscitate order in Terri's medical chart.

Megan,
Did you see that Ralph Nader (brainwashed by Randall Terry, I suppose...LOL) has come out in support of Terri and the Schindlers?

"A profound injustice is being inflicted on Terri Schiavo," Nader and Smith asserted today. "Worse, this slow death by dehydration is being imposed upon her under the color of law, in proceedings in which every benefit of the doubt-and there are many doubts in this case-has been given to her death, rather than her continued life."

Among the many injustices in this case, Nader and Smith point to the following:

The courts not only are refusing her tube feeding, but have ordered that no attempts be made to provide her water or food by mouth. Terri swallows her own saliva. Spoon feeding is not medical treatment. "This outrageous order proves that the courts are not merely permitting medical treatment to be withheld, it has ordered her to be made dead," Nader and Smith assert.

The medical and rehabilitation experts are split on whether Terri is in a persistent vegetative state or whether Terri can be improved with therapy. There is only one way to know for sure- permit the therapy. That is the only way to resolve all doubts.

The court is imposing process over justice. After the first trial in this case, much evidence has been produced that should allow for a new trial-which was the point of the hasty federal legislation. If this were a death penalty case, this evidence would demand reconsideration. Yet, an innocent disabled woman is receiving less justice.

The federal and state governments are spending billions on what we are told will become miracle medical cures for people with all sorts of degenerative conditions, including brain damage. If this is so, why not permit Terri's parents and siblings who want to care for her do so in the hope that such cures are discovered?

Benefits of doubts should be given to life, not hastened death. This case is rife with doubt. Justice demands that Terri be permitted to live.

Mr Bell,

I appreciate your prompt response. It is not the wish of the shippers to have these returned to them. It has been our intention to have them picked up (originally from Woodside). These donations are a part of symbolic donation on behalf of Terri Schiavo's need and right to have food and water.

Federal Express and UPS are very kindly working with me as much as possible to redirect shipments.

I will be making arrangements to have those donations picked up from your facility.

Mr Bell, I just need to be clear...you will not allow those donations to be picked up by a local ministry?

Thank you.

I am another of those conservatives who is here to support your valiant efforts. Forget about those Richard Craniums (Dick is short for Richard if you know what I mean). You are one cool lady by coming out and supporting a woman who has been mercilessly abused by that double dealing, two timing snake in the grass who made a vow to love her in sickness and in health.

Ok, so I am an Aussie sticking my nose into this affair. I have done what you have done, and looked into the facts.

The two troublemakes are known for their trolling around the blogosphere. Nothing will change the inanity of their opinions. It would be a true medical miracle that Terri Schindler could last for 15 years if she was in the state as claimed by Dr. Death Cranford.

Of course the MSM have to discount Dr. Chesire because he is a Christian. I cannot see what that has to do with making a proper diagnosis in this case. Then there is the evidence of Nora Wagner to consider, a nurse with 30 years experience in the field who has stated that Terri is cognizant.

There are some people who seem happy to go along with what is quite clearly a crime because of their own pathetic ideology.

I might be conservative but I do believe that this is an issue that crosses the divide and if people truly have open and loving hearts then they would cease living amongst their own excrement and truly see what kind of a creep is calling the shots in the fate of Terri Schindler.

I'm so sorry Granny. I tried to delete the duplicates and they all went "poof".

I am reposting the comment that Granny sent to me.

Hi,
I am a grandmother and 66 years of age. Quite obviously I don't know how to blog. I did manage to get something said on a place called common sense but ended up getting under someone else's post and gave my real name and address. (good grief)
Nevertheless, there are things that need to be said concerning Terri Schavio.
Is it possible that someone could contact the vatican and request the Pope give Terri an annulment from Michael Schaivo?
Also, has anyone done a background check on George Greer? I'd like to know if he is being treated for mental health problems at this time. And I'd also like to know what his qualifications are to pass a death sentence on Terri. I once knew an elected judge in TN who had a 7th grade education.
I worked in protective services for many years and I KNOW Gov Bush has the authority to take her into protective custody through CFS; however, he would have to take it before a judge withing 24 hours after removal.
Now if George Greer were in jail for "contempt of congress" and interfering with a federal witness, Governor Bush would have to appoint someone else to fill that vacancy.
I have sent 100's of emails to officials and done all I know to do. This whole thing stinks badly.

Thanks

Megan, I'm detecting someone who will talk the talk, but not the walk the walk. You live in Florida. Many of the protesters busy making fools of themselves had to drive or fly from elsewhere. If you serious about believing that carrying out of Terri Schiavo's wish not to be kept alive by artificial means is murder, you should be in jail by now. Yes. To Hell with all those unneeded groceries. Why isn't your behind at the hospice taking at least the risk of a misdemeanor arrest for the cause you claim to believe in? I will hazard a guess that it is because you a hypocrite.

BTW, people with feeding tubes do not eat actual food. Instead, a compound of nutrients is used. So, even if Schiavo were conscious, sending her food would be pointless. Obviously, you as uninformed about that as you are about everything else having to do with the Schiavo case. . .and, one suspects, the world in general.

Sapphoria / Megan said...

Good Lord, you really are an idiot, aren't you? It all just goes right over your head, doesn't it. We will all just have to take it bit slower with you. Now, now...start with the T I T L E of this thread and give it another go.

Anonymous said...

No, I'm not an idiot, Megan. Any reasonable person reading the thread will realize that one of us is well-informed and the other isn't. That bothers you a lot, doesn't it? It is clear this entry was written by a fool. When people who are well-informed comment, that makes the foolishness of the blogger even more obvious. There is a solution. Don't start threads about things you clearly have no grasp of and intelligent people will not have to come along and correct you.

Alan, have you read any mainstream source about the Schiavo case? I think not. You just post propaganda from Right to Life sites over and over again. I guess multiplicity is suppose to enhance nonsense somehow. But, it doesn't.

•The medical trust, which could only be used for medical purposes contrary to the slander you and others engage in, has been used up for years. Medicaid has been covering the care of Terri Schiavo at an estimated $80,000 per year.

•All four of the court appointed neurologists agree that Ms. Schiavo is in a persistent vegetative state. Only the guy considered a quack the Schindlers hired disagreed. He submitted no evidence and the court scolded him for being a self-promoter. Hammesfahr has also been disciplined by the Florida medical board. His Nobel Prize nomination? He had a legislator print up a letter nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize in Medicine. There is no such award.

•Cheshire is not as much a laughing stock as Hammesfahr, but he has no expertise in working with PVS patients. Nor has he examined Ms. Schiavo or done any tests. He has never published an article on PVS or done any research on the topic. He was trotted out because of his religious views, not because he is qualified to offer insight into the case.

Nor is your timeline correct. The court records make it quite clear that nothing about Michael Schiavo's conduct has been driven by money. Indeed, but for his bringing a lawsuit over Ms. Schiavo's bulemia, there would not have been a medical trust fund.

Correction to typo in previous post:

[Megan]

Why isn't your behind at the hospice taking at least the risk of a misdemeanor arrest for the cause you claim to believe in? I will hazard a guess that it is because you are a hypocrite.

No, Mac Diva, please continue to post here ... it's fascinating to listed to (or read) angry liberals rant and rave; you can hear the anger and hatred in your posts ... and the logic! My God the lack of logic is fantastic!

Tell me Mac Diva, do you believe in the death penalty? Or do you only believe the innocent (in the womb and the hospice) should die?

How about this one. Should Scott Peterson have the constitutional right to have his case heard in a federal court? And if there is doubt over his conviction, moments before they're about to 'flip the switch' would you support perhaps holding off on killing him so the court can make sure it's the right thing to do?

Or how about an easy one ... what frightens you so much about the life of Terri Schiavo that you get so worked up to see her die?

Oh, and save your breath ... I know what you're about to say and yes, you better believe that "I'm jumping to conclusions about you" and, you're right, I "don't know you" and I'm sure to you that I "sound like a right wing hack".

So now that we've gotten your initial response out of the way, answer the questions.

And by the way, the "vegetable" starting bleeding out of her eyes and mouth today.

Medical Records Fraud Exposed - Terri Schiavo 1996 CT "Liquified Brain" Scan is Likely a Hoax

Terri's 1996 CT scan entered into evidence in Judge Greer's courtroom is likely a hoax. The informed consensus on CodeBlueBlog believes:
1. The "liquified" brain scan is from someone else's chart
2. There's a way to prove it - in fact I've put together the argument and am working on a more rigorous proof right now
3. There is a trojan horse in the evidence that even judge Greer can't deny. The scan undermines their own diagnosis of "PVS".

Hope you find it useful! You realize we're dealing with medical records fraud - fraud that is being used to kill someone.

Thanks! -RD :)

Some of its most basic features are RSS Optimization, webmaster tools verification, xml sitemap, snippets, and a reliable page analysis.
The same rule is applied to the web page
popularity. The terminology of SEO might be foreign and the concepts may be
more repulsive than your least favorite class in school, but for website marketing SEO is often
a language that should be learned in case you are serious about creating the most of one's online store.
